Where the data comes from

The etymological relationships behind every route come from Wiktionary, through the etymology-db dataset, which extracts etymology links from Wiktionary entries into a structured table.

Licence and attribution

Wiktionary text is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence, and the dataset carries that licence forward. Wanderwort's route data is adapted from it: we selected words, reordered and checked each chain, added the intermediate forms and placed each language on a map. That adapted data is shared under the same licence. Credit belongs to the Wiktionary contributors who wrote the underlying entries.

The definitions, notes and puzzle wording in the game are our own. Quotations are credited to their authors where they appear.

Fonts

Text is set in Source Serif 4 and JetBrains Mono, both released under the SIL Open Font License and served from this site rather than from a third party.

Known limits of the source

Wiktionary entries vary a lot in depth. Some record every stage of a borrowing and some jump straight from the source language to English. Where a chain was incomplete or contradicted itself, we left the word out rather than guess. A few languages are represented under the name of the nearest documented stage.

Report an error

If a route, form or definition looks wrong, please tell us the word and what you believe the correct account is, ideally with a source, to hello@wanderwort.app.
